MASH raises concerns in the press about broken Universal Credit system
Caroline and Tina from our team have been commenting in the news this week about an increase in women telling us that problems with Universal Credit payments have pushed them to turn to sex work.
They told the MEN that sanctions, the wait for the first payment and the accumulation of debt due to deductions or Advance Payments are causing difficulties for benefit claimants. More women are telling us that this is the reason they have turned to sex work, sometimes for the first time.
Tina and Caroline were interviewed by MEN reporter, Beth Abbit, and told her that the situation is the “worst” they have ever seen it.
Tina Threadgold, said; “There has always been an issue with benefits and women supplementing a very low income, but it’s never felt quite as bad as it is now…It’s at rock bottom, the worst I have ever seen it.”
